Commemoration of Women’s Day: Celebrating Women in Space Science and Astronomy at IAU-GA2024

Join us for an inspiring and educational event at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on 9 August as we commemorate Women’s Day by celebrating the remarkable contributions of women in science and astronomy. This special occasion is open to the public, and we warmly invite you and your families to attend and be part of this enriching experience.

Keynote Speakers and Talks:

We are honoured to host a lineup of distinguished women scientists and astronomers who will share their journeys, challenges, and achievements. Their talks aim to inspire the next generation of scientists and highlight the pivotal role women play in advancing scientific knowledge.

The event will feature:

  • Talk and Q&A by Mae Jemison, NASA astronaut
  • Live radio contact with Sunita Williams on board the International Space Station
  • Thrilling science shows, fascinating exhibitions
  • Tabletop telescope building
  • Interactions with leading astronomers

11:00 EVENT STARTS: Welcome and introduction to the event (Duduzile Kubheka & Sally Macfarlane, 10 mins)

11:25 My Journey into Science (3 speakers at different stages of their careers will talk about how they got into science and their inspirations, each 12 mins + 3 mins for questions)

11:25 – 11:40 Narusha Isaacs (15 mins)

11:55 – 12:10 Ann Njeri (15 mins)

12:10 – 13:20 Lunch Break and Exhibit area walk around. Public will get this time to walk through exhibition area and other IAU GA 2024 exhibitions
